Rougheye Rockfish is a delightful eating fish, featuring white, moderately flavored flesh that is tender yet firm enough to hold up to any cooking method. Whether grilled, fried, or paired with dill, lemon pepper, and garlic, it delivers a great taste experience. Also known as blackthroat and blacktip, this fish is popular off the West Coast of British Columbia. Its name comes from a distinct row of tiny spines beneath its eyes. Remarkably long-lived, rougheye rockfish can reach over 140 years of age, growing up to 38 inches and 19 pounds.

Caught using hook and line, trawl, or longline methods, rougheye rockfish are managed as part of the West Coast groundfish fishery under the careful oversight of NOAA Fisheries and the Pacific Fishery Management Council. Its forgiving nature makes it versatile in recipes calling for white fish, offering a flavor reminiscent of being freshly caught from the ocean. The fillet sizes vary with each shipment, ranging from under 1/2 lb to over a pound, making it a versatile staple for a family’s regular seafood intake.
